Making an SSL connection

Making an SSL connection requires little additional configuration to new or existing site profiles.

When creating a new site profile through the Connection Wizard, change the Server Type to FTPS/SSL, or FTPS/Implicit SSL when prompted by the wizard.

If editing an existing site profile:

  1. In the toolbar, click Connect to open the Site Manager.
  2. Select the site from the configured sites list, then click Edit. The Site Options dialog appears.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. In Server type, select FTPS/SSL, or FTPS/Implicit SSL server type. Click OK.
Note: For a description of the different SSL types, see SSL vs Implicit SSL.
  5. Click Connect to connect to the site. WS_FTP 'tells' the server that you want to make an SSL connection. The server then transmits an identifying certificate, letting the client know who the server is. If that certificate is already listed in the client's Trusted Authority database, the connection will be made.
  6. If that certificate is not listed as a trusted authority, the Non-Trusted Authority window will appear.
  7. Select the option you need and click OK. If the server does not require a certificate to be returned, the secure connection will be established. All data transmitted between you and the server will be encrypted.

If you are attempting to make a connection to a server which asks WS_FTP to send back a certificate, follow the directions for Client Certificate Verification.
