Host Name or IP Address (defintion)
Every system (computer) on the Internet has an official host name and Internet (IP) address. In order to connect to an FTP site, you must find out the official name or address of the site. For example, a system might have a host name of superserv.progress.com and an IP address of 123.124.125.126. In WS_FTP, you can use either the host name or the IP address to specify a particular FTP site.
Examples
- For most large, well- known companies, their FTP sites are named "ftp.companyname.com" (e.g. ftp.microsoft.com, ftp.adobe.com, and ftp.aol.com)
- To get the name or address of an FTP site, use a search engine such as Google.com or Yahoo.com to search for the name. Or, try replacing the "www" portion of the organization's URL with "ftp", for example replace www.progress.com with ftp.progress.com. Or simply call the company and ask for the name of their FTP site.
- If you want to connect to an FTP site maintained by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your ISP will provide you with an FTP name or address that looks something like: ftp.progress.com or 156.22.3.1.
