The Device Properties - Polling and Maintenance property allows you to configure and manage polling for the device. Polling is the term used for monitoring a discovered device in WhatsUp Gold. Polling can occur in several ways, depending on the monitors configured for a network device. The default polling method uses Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). The default polling interval for WhatsUp Gold is 60 seconds. WhatsUp Gold sends a small amount of data across the network to the monitored device. If the device is up, it echoes the data back to WhatsUp Gold. If the device is down, it does not echo back to WhatsUp Gold.
Configure the following:
- Polling. Select the number of seconds you want to pass between polls for the device.
- Poll Using. Select either to use the Address (IP Address) or Host Name (DNS Name) as the polling target.
- Polling Up Dependency. Click Configure next to Polling Up Dependency to configure a dependency for the device on another device. If the selected active monitors on another device are in the up state, then the device is polled. For more information, see Setting Dependencies.
- Polling Down Dependency. Click Configure next to Polling Up Dependency to configure a dependency for the device on another device. If the selected active monitors on another device are in the down state, then the device is polled. For more information, see Setting Dependencies.
