Use the Monitors tab in the to configure the initial monitor list designated as part of network discovery and to control the following:

  • Monitors designated for devices during discovery. (Designated monitors are activated later when you Add Monitoring.)
  • Interface(s) WhatsUp Gold designates monitors for (using Filters and Application Rules).
  • Interface(s) WhatsUp Gold defers monitors for (using Filters and Application Rules).
Tip: Monitors associated with a device as part of network discovery are typically designated in a sub role definition for a device type.

Device role monitor view controls include:

  • Add. Add a monitor from the Monitors Library to this role definition.
  • Delete. Remove a monitor from this list.
  • Restore System Default. Reduce monitor list to the default based on the suggested role.
  • Filter Library. Build rule sets to refine the range and scope of devices considered for a particular filter.

Use these controls to pre-determine key (critical) monitors, opt to use soft (check support first) or hard (always apply) monitor designation and to apply advanced or custom filtering.

  • Name. Displays the name or type of monitor assigned to the device. Click the monitor name to launch the monitor configuration dialog to make changes, if needed.
  • Type. Indicates if the monitor is active, passive, or performance.
  • Critical. Monitors you designate as critical monitors denote the overall device is in a down state if the monitor is down.
  • Application Rule. Designate a condition or check for support before applying the monitor to a given device.
  • Filter. (Typically used for network interfaces) Select a filter mode: Operationally Up Interfaces or All Interfaces.
  • Action Policy Designate an action policy to apply to the monitor.
Note: When monitors are assigned through roles and subroles, multiple subroles can apply to the same device. If two or more subroles with equal weighting assign the same monitor type (for example, a Ping monitor), WhatsUp Gold does not guarantee which subrole’s monitor configuration is applied. As a result, the monitor instance that is created—and its associated settings, such as action policies—may come from any of the matching subroles. This can lead to inconsistent or unexpected action policy behavior across devices with similar role assignments. To ensure predictable monitor and action policy assignment, configure subroles so that:
  • Each subrole that applies the same monitor type has a unique weighting value, or
  • The monitor and its action policy are defined in only one applicable subrole.
Note: For interface ports, Operationally Up means that the port is in a running state and not in a non-operational state (such Testing, Unknown, or Down).
