To discover and monitor Azure resources in WhatsUp Gold, you need to set up a credential in WhatsUp Gold and a Service Principal in Azure. The Service Principal must have Read access to any Azure Resource Group you want to monitor.

A Service Principal contains many attributes. The attributes required to create the WhatsUp Gold credential are:

  • Tenant ID
  • Client ID
  • Client Secret (Secret Key)

Once you have these three values, enter them into the corresponding fields when creating the Azure credential in WhatsUp Gold.

Because the Azure portal and its Service Principal setup process change frequently, refer to Microsoft's official documentation for current, step-by-step instructions:

Tip: Always consult Microsoft's current documentation, as Azure's portal workflows and options are subject to change.
Important: Earlier versions of this topic included detailed, step-by-step instructions for creating a Service Principal via the Azure Management Portal. Those steps were accurate at the time they were written but are no longer maintained here, since Microsoft's process has changed. See the Microsoft documentation linked above for current instructions.
