Explanation
When you create a new model, two languages are added automatically: Language Neutral, and English (selected as default). In the Knowledge Model Management (KMM) navigation tree and views, concept labels will appear in the default language.

This article explains how to change a model’s default language so that all users initially will have the model presented in that language when they initially access it. “Presented language” refers to the display of a concept in the tree panel, the title of the concept’s details panel, and the creation of new labels. (You can always change the presented language for your current session as explained in change-display-language-without-changing-default.)
Assumptions
- You have the MANAGER role for the model
- You have an existing model.
- You have more than one language activated in the model for use. (Note: You do not need to have any language packs installed to use languages in the model.)
Method
The following example uses the “Space Missions” model. The steps are valid for any model that meets the assumptions listed above.
- From the Dashboard view, click the model you want to open.
- Click Open Master to open the master model.
- On the left, click and expand Programmes & Missions. Notice how the default language is set to “English (en)” in the filter menu (#1 in image) and the labels appear in English (#2 in image).

- Click the options to return to the model dashboard.

- On the model dashboard screen, click Language.

- In the list of languages, place a check mark next to the one you want to have as the default language in your model. (This example uses French.)

Outcome
After applying the changes, you will notice these differences:
- The language filter now shows the new default language (#1 in image). (In this example, it is “French (fr)”.)
- If a concept label does not exist in the chosen default language, an existing label from another language, such as language neutral or English, will appear, along with the language code (#2 in image). (When you add a label in the default language, this view will change to show the default language label instead.)
- Preferred labels now appear in the new default language (#3 in image).
