How to add a concept

Explanation
This topic explains how to create two types of concepts: top concepts and regular concepts.
A concept is the core entity in a model. Concepts can have multiple labels, metadata properties, and relationships to enrich their meaning and purpose in a model.
This topic guides you through the following procedures:
Assumptions
Before you start, you need the following:
- A model that contains at least one concept scheme.
- MANAGER, EDITOR, or CONTRIBUTOR permissions for the model.
Create a Top Concept

Open a model (in this example, Test Model), and click Open Master or open a task.

From the list of concepts on the left, click
for the concept scheme in which you want to add a Top Concept.Note: You can also add concepts suggested by the AI Model Builder by clicking the
(Suggest) icon. For more information, see How to add a concept with the AI Model Builder.

In the Create a new concept for <concept scheme> dialogue; then, click Save:
- Concept Name: Specify the name of the new concept. For example,
Parents. - Language: Select a label and language for the concept (in this example, English (en)).
- Select class: Select any number of classes for the concept (in this example, Parents).
If you do not choose a class, then the concept will default to the Concept class. - Please select the relationship type: Select is top concept of (the default).
- Customize URI (Optional): Check box to specify a custom URI for your concept.

- Concept Name: Specify the name of the new concept. For example,

Open a model (in this example, Test Model), and click Edit Master or open a task.

On the left-hand navigation area, hover on any concept and click

In the Create a new concept for <concept name> dialogue, configure the following fields; then, click Save:

Concept Name: Specify the label for your concept. For example,
Father. -
Language: Select the language for the concept. In this example, English (en).

Select class: Select any number of classes for the concept. For example, Parents.
Note: If you do not choose a class, then the concept will default to the parent concept’s class.
- Please select the relationship type: Select the relationship type. For example, has broader.
- Customize the URI (optional): Edit the URI for the concept.

Optionally, in the Details view, use the following fields to add or edit information about your concept class:
- Concept Class: Add or change classes.
- Preferred Labels: Change the preferred label, add a label in a new language:
- Click Create a preferred label to add a label in a new language.
- Click
to add metadata to the corresponding preferred label; then:
- In the Choose metadata field, select the field for your metadata.
- Click + Add. A field that corresponds to your selected metadata field opens.
- In the field, specify the value of your metadata field.
- Repeat the preceding steps to add additional metadata for your preferred label.
- Alternative Labels: Add alternative labels in any language.
- Click the Create an alternative label to manually specify a label.
- Click Suggest alternative labels for your AI agent to suggest a list of alternative labels.
- Click
to add metadata to the corresponding alternative label; then:
- In the Choose metadata field, select the field for your metadata.
- Click + Add. A field that corresponds to your selected metadata field opens.
- In the field, specify the value of your metadata field.
- Repeat the preceding steps to add additional metadata for your alternative label.
- Metadata: Add metadata properties for your concept.
- Top Concept Of: Add or change Top Concept Of relationship to concept schemes.
- Related Concepts: Specify concepts that are related to your concept.
- Broader Concepts: Specify concepts that have a broader relationship to your concept.
- Narrower Concepts: Specify concepts that have a narrower relationship to your concept:
- Click the Select a narrower concept to manually specify a concept.
- Click Suggest narrower concepts for your AI agent to suggest a list of narrower concepts.

Outcome
Your new concept is available for selection from the concept tree on the left. Details of your concept are open in the Details view.
