Replication failover tranistion supports rolling upgrade on OpenEdge Databases operating version 12.1 and later. This functionality enables Replication to operate between Replication-enabled databases operating OpenEdge version 12.1 and Replication-enabled databases operating subsequent versions (e.g. 12.2 and later.) In the event a Replication-enabled database connects to a database operating an older version of OpenEdge, the database operating the newer version will adjust its functionality downward to be compatible with the database operating on the older version.

OpenEdge version 12.2 introduces online failover transition as default. As a result, whenever a source database operating OpenEdge 12.2 or subsequent versions performs a failover transition to a target database operating version 12.1, the source database will revert to 12.1 failover transition functionality and failover offline. Likewise, whenever a source database operating OpenEdge 12.1 performs a failover transition to a target database operating version 12.2 or subsequent versions, the source database will failover offline. This functionality operates the same for mixed version Replication sets. Failover will revert to the older version 12.1 functionality and transition offline.
