Microsoft Entra ID app roles

Note:

You must be a tenant administrator to map roles through Progress Data Cloud interface.

By default, tenant administrators assign roles manually within Progress Data Cloud.

Alternatively, tenant administrators can map Microsoft Entra ID app roles to Progress Data Cloud roles. This allows Entra ID app roles to be used to determine which PDC roles are assigned to a user.

Prerequisite:

A Microsoft Entra ID administrator must create an Entra ID app registration for Progress Data Cloud. See Microsoft Entra ID app registration for details.

After an Entra ID app registration has been created for Progress Data Cloud, there are three steps to map Entra ID app roles to Progress Data Cloud roles.

Create Entra ID app roles

A Microsoft Entra ID administrator must create app roles in Entra ID:

  1. Log in to the Azure portal.

  2. Select Microsoft Entra ID.

  3. On the sidebar, under Manage, click App registrations.

  4. Select the Progress Data Cloud application where you want to define app roles.

    Note:

    The name of the application may be different in your configuration.

  5. On the sidebar, click App roles.

  6. Click Create app role.

  7. Enter the fields as required. The value in the Value text box will be used to create the map in PDC.

    This value will be used to map the role.
  8. Click Apply. Repeat this process and add as many app roles as required.

Assign app roles to Entra ID users

After creating app roles, assign them to Entra ID users:

  1. Navigate to the App registrations page.
  2. On the sidebar, under Manage, select Enterprise applications.
  3. Click the Progress Data Cloud application.
  4. Under Manage click Users and groups.
  5. Click Add user/group.
  6. On the Add Assignment screen, under Users click the hyperlink.
  7. Search for and select the user to assign the role to.

  9. Under Select a role, click the hyperlink.
  10. Select a role from the sidebar.
  11. Click Select.

    Select a predefined role on this screen and click Select.

Map app roles to PDC roles

After App roles are created and assigned to Entra ID users, the roles need to be mapped to PDC roles. This is done in PDC:

  1. In PDC, click the Configure menu and select Roles.

  2. Click the Edit icon Edit icon.

  3. In the Assigned in group, select the Microsoft Entra ID option. The Microsoft Entra ID Mapping heading appears with + Add new item under it.

  4. Click + Add new item. The Value and Type text boxes appear.

  5. Enter these values:

    • Value: The value entered when creating app roles in Entra ID.
    • Type: The service for which you are mapping this role. Role mapping example
      The Value text box should contain the role value from Entra ID.
  6. Click + under Service. This mapping is now complete. You can delete the map by clicking The Trashcan Icon.

  7. Repeat these steps to map more App roles.

  8. Click Save. The Edit Role window closes.

From now on, when a user signs in to Progress Data Cloud through Entra ID, Progress Data Cloud automatically assigns the user any tenancy roles that match the user's Entra ID app roles.
