While configuring IP address whitelists at runtime offers a measure of security, networks may still be vulnerable to IP spoofing. Therefore, you should consider adopting the following best practices with respect to managing and monitoring network traffic.
- Configure ingress filtering: Implement ingress filtering on routers and firewalls to accept only incoming packets with valid source IP addresses and block packets from unknown source addresses.
- Deploy network intrusion detection systems (NIDS): Use NIDS to detect and alert on suspicious traffic patterns that may indicate IP spoofing.
- Use secure protocols: Use secure protocols like HTTPS, SSH, and VPNs that provide encryption and authentication.
- Monitor network traffic: Continuously monitor network traffic for anomalies and unusual patterns that could indicate spoofing attempts.
