You can modify basic settings and manage groups on the Packet Investigator > Settings page.

Basic settings

You can modify basic parameters of communication with Flowmon Probes in the Basic settings section.

The collector uses the Control port to manage probes, and it uses the Data collection port to receive recordings from probes. In most cases, there is no need to change the default values. Clicking Save applies the changes and restarts the Packet Investigator. Values of both ports must correspond to the settings on the Flowmon Probes to establish proper communication. All communication with probes is protected using TLS encryption.

Groups

Groups are assigned to user roles and allow you to control user access to recordings. Users can create new recordings and download recorded data that belong to the group assigned to their role. Each user may belong to multiple groups based on the assignment of user roles and their respective groups.

The following options can be configured when managing groups:

  • Name: The name of the group.
  • Quota: The maximum amount of disk space that can be used for recordings in the group.
  • Merge traffic into one file: Default value for Split mode when creating new recordings. See Recordings for more details.

Once the assigned disk quota is reached, the oldest recordings in the group are automatically deleted (unless the Rotate option is disabled when the recordings are created) to free up space for new recordings. If the automatic deletion of old recordings cannot free up space for new ones (if all recordings in the group are exempt from deletion), active recordings in the group will stop immediately, and new ones cannot be created until space is freed up by manually deleting old recordings or increasing the group quota. The automatic deletion process always deletes all captured data associated with a recording, never just parts of it. In case the analysis was performed on a recording, the analysis results are still available.
