- OpenEdge MCP Server
- Version 1.1
- Documentation
The OpenEdge MCP Server supports multiple environments for development and production. Review the following details before installation.
Development platforms
The OpenEdge MCP Server supports development on the following platforms:
- Linux
- Windows
Note: Production deployments are not supported on Windows
because the actual runtime of the MCP server is always on Linux.
Production platforms
The OpenEdge MCP Server container images are OCI-compatible and supported for production deployments on Linux-based OCI-compatible container runtimes. Production deployments require a Linux-based runtime. The container images are compatible with OCI-compliant container engines as well as Kubernetes orchestration platforms.
The following details summarize the deployment requirements and platform
considerations for the OpenEdge MCP Server container images:
- Container image requirements: The OpenEdge MCP Server container images are Linux-based and require a Linux runtime environment for production deployments.
- Production deployment best practice: Production deployments must run on Linux-based container runtimes.
Prerequisites
The following table lists the required components for installation and their
purpose:
| Component | Minimum version | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docker Engine | 24+ (tested up to 26.x) | Runs MCP Server and utilities containers | Required for all security operations (TLS, Service Account tokens) |
| Docker Compose | v2 plugin (preferred) or docker-compose v1 | Orchestrates the profile stack | Detected by the mcpgen doctor
command |
| Python | 3.11 and later | Executes mcpgen and utilities
locally |
Required; versions outside this range are not supported |
| OpenAPI specification | OpenAPI 3.x with stable, unique
operationIdvalues |
Serves as the source of truth for tool generation |
|
| unzip | Any | Extracts the distribution archive | Not needed if cloning from source |
| Bash shell | Any recent version | Required for running shell scripts on Linux | Should be installed on Linux systems |
Notes
- As a prerequisite, the environment must pass checks by running
./mcpgen doctorbefore first use. For more information, see Step 3: Verify your environment. - All TLS certificate generation and Service Account operations use
containerized security utilities (
openedge-mcp-utils). No local OpenSSL installation is required. - Host Python is mandatory because the
mcpgenshell wrapper executes Python code from the distributed wheel or source. Supported range is 3.11 and later. - Windows users can use either Command Prompt or PowerShell. Linux users can use any preferred shell.
