When a separate test environment is not in place, the upgrade process should begin with cloning the production environment and then upgrading this cloned environment. After the upgrade, the DNS record of the load balancer should be updated such that the hostname of the load balancer resolves to the IP address of the load balancer clone, thus routing traffic to the upgraded version of the service.
