The Renames feature allows you to assign custom names to important values in Progress® Flowmon®, such as IP addresses, MAC addresses, and other network identifiers. These names improve readability in the Monitoring Center and help you recognize devices and services more easily during analysis.

Renames management

Since version 13.1.0, the Configuration Center > Monitoring Center > Renames page contains a dedicated management tab for all rename entries in the system. This page displays all renames in one place and allows you to edit or delete them directly, without first locating the item in a table, such as Active Devices.

Before version 13.1.0, if a renamed device was no longer present in the list of active devices, the rename could remain in the system and be difficult to find or remove without direct database intervention. The new Renames management page lets you manage these entries centrally.

Opening Renames

Open Configuration Center > Monitoring Center > Renames to view and manage the full list of rename records. The page displays all existing renames in the system and allows you to search, edit, and delete them from one location.

Managing Renames

Use the Renames page to perform the following actions:

  • Search or filter - find a specific entry in a long list of renames.
  • Edit - change the custom name assigned to an existing value.
  • Delete - remove a stored rename even if the original device is no longer visible in Active Devices.

Using Renames in Analysis

After a rename is created, Flowmon displays the custom name in the relevant table and analysis views instead of the raw identifier. This makes it easier to read reports and spot devices that have special meaning in your environment.

You can use renamed values in filters and searches to narrow the results to the specific object or device that you want to investigate.

Note:

Renames do not change the underlying network data. They only provide a user-friendly display name for analysis and reporting.

Best Practices

Some best practices relating to renames are as follows:

  • Keep names short and clear.
  • Use consistent naming for devices that appear repeatedly in your environment.
  • Review the rename list periodically to remove outdated entries.

The new Renames management page helps you keep the system clean and manage obsolete rename entries without searching through Active Devices or modifying the database directly.
