This section uses Devin Desktop as the reference IDE. You can complete the set up steps in any IDE that meets the following requirements:
  • Supports the OpenEdge AI Assistant
  • Can be configured to connect to your local OpenEdge 12.8 and later installation
Common alternatives include GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Continue, and so on. If you use a different IDE, the screenshots and menu paths in this section may differ. Refer to the documentation for your chosen IDE for equivalent steps.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, you must meet the following prerequisites:
  • You must have a valid IDE license. For Devin Desktop, at minimum, a Teams license is required for team collaboration features. For more information, see "Plans and Pricing" on the Devin Desktop website.
  • You have OpenEdge Release 12.8 and later installed on your system.
  • You have Node.js installed (required by the MCP client for the npx command). If you launched Devin Desktop from a command prompt, restart the command prompt after installing Node.js for the changes to take effect.

Install Devin Desktop

To get started with Devin Desktop, follow these steps to register, install, and configure the application for use within your organization. This section ensures a smooth setup experience and highlights important considerations for installation and access.
  1. Navigate to the Devin Desktop account registration page. Use your company email address to complete the registration.
Note: Using a company email ensures proper access to team features and admin privileges.
  2. Open a browser and go to Devin Desktop Editor. Ensure you are logged in with your registered account.
  3. Click the Download button on the editor page and run the installer.

If you are using a local Administrator account, you may see the following warning message:

You can safely ignore this message and proceed with the default installation settings. However, be aware of the following limitations:
    • Automatic updates are disabled
    • Connectivity issues may occur

Progress recommends that you use a specific user account and not a local administrator account to install and run Devin Desktop for optimal performance. To update Devin Desktop when running as administrator:

    1. Close Devin Desktop.
    2. Download the latest version from the Devin Desktop webpage.
    3. Run the installer manually.
  4. After installation, start Devin Desktop.
  5. Right-click the Devin Desktop icon in the taskbar and select Pin to taskbar for quick access.
Devin Desktop is now installed, but it has no knowledge of ABL grammar, language reference, or OpenEdge APIs. The next step is to connect Devin Desktop to the live ABL reference documentation using the OpenEdge AI Assistant. This is what enables the AI agent to provide accurate, ABL-aware code suggestions.
