Upgrading the OpenEdge installation to a later version, invokes the ESAM installer to check the existing ESAM version and compare it with the new version. If the installed version is newer than the existing version, the installation updates the existing ESAM libraries. If the installed version of ESAM is older than the existing ESAM version, the ESAM libraries are not updated and the OpenEdge upgrade continues.

The older OpenEdge installations with earlier versions of the ESAM service API are compatible with any subsequent ESAM installations and upgrades that occur during the later OpenEdge installations. When both the versions of ESAM are the same, then the ESAM installation does not change any ESAM libraries and the OpenEdge upgrade continues further. If the ESAM installation fails for some reason, the OpenEdge installation proceeds normally. You can check the ESAM install logs to know the reason for failure and then fix the problem by running the ESAM installer again.

For more information, see Troubleshoot OpenEdge installation failures.

Note: All new OpenEdge installations on a given system ensure that ESAM is upgraded to the latest version. Though ESAM is only supported in OpenEdge 12.6 and later versions, it is always compatible with any OpenEdge installation that was already on the same system before ESAM was installed.
