The OpenEdge AI Assistant is the component of the OpenEdge AI Coding Assistant solution that connects your IDE to live ABL language reference, grammar, and documentation context using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It combines Generative AI (GenAI) with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to deliver domain-specific accuracy, context-aware coding support, and modernization capabilities that generic models cannot provide.

The OpenEdge AI Assistant provides an interactive workspace where you can query, generate, and refine ABL code directly within your existing workflow.
Note: The OpenEdge AI Assistant extension is freely available from the VS Code Marketplace or Open VSX Registry. However, connecting it to ABL reference data requires a Progress Data Cloud account, which is available to OpenEdge customers with an active Maintenance Contract. See Register for Progress Data Cloud user account.
To use the OpenEdge AI Assistant, follow these steps:
  1. Request access to Progress Data Cloud from Progress Administrator by filling out and submitting Request Access Form. For information about Progress Data Cloud, see Use Progress Data Cloud.
  2. Register for Progress Data Cloud user account.
  3. Obtain Progress Data Cloud API key.
  4. Configure the OpenEdge AI Assistant.
