Before configuring the gateway, ensure the following are in place:

  • A Power BI Desktop report has been built using the Hybrid Data Pipeline connector. See Custom connector for Power BI.
  • A Power BI account with an OPDG license is available. (OPDG installation is covered in the procedure below.)
  • The Hybrid Data Pipeline Power BI connector is installed and the certificate thumbprint is registered on the machine that will host the OPDG. See Installing the Hybrid Data Pipeline Power BI connector.

This topic describes how to use reports built with the Hybrid Data Pipeline Power BI connector in Power BI Service (cloud). Power BI Service cannot connect directly to an on-premises Hybrid Data Pipeline server. Instead, the Microsoft On-Premises Data Gateway (OPDG) acts as a bridge between Power BI Service and your local Hybrid Data Pipeline server.

To use reports built with the Hybrid Data Pipeline Power BI connector in Power BI Service (cloud):

  1. Install the On-Premises Data Gateway on the host machine. See Download and install a standard gateway in the Microsoft documentation.
  2. On the OPDG host machine, grant the OPDG service account Full Control on the Custom Connectors folder:

    Documents\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors

  3. In Power BI Service, go to Settings > Manage connections and gateways, then enable custom connectors for your gateway cluster.
  4. Add a new data source to the gateway:
    1. Select your gateway cluster.
    2. Enter a connection name.
    3. For Connection type, select the Hybrid Data Pipeline connector function that matches your authentication method (for example, HDP OData (Basic) (Custom)).
    4. Enter the required connection parameters and credentials.
  5. Publish the report to Power BI Service to create a semantic model in your workspace.
  6. In the semantic model settings in Power BI Service, confirm the gateway connection and schedule a refresh as required. See Configure scheduled refresh.
