Upgrading to the latest version of WS_FTP Server ensures that you have access to the latest features, fixes, security updates, and usability improvements.

Get the Installer and Activation Code

To get a WS_FTP Server installer package:

  1. Log in to the Progress Customer and Community portal and select Product Downloads.
  2. Download the product package.

    When you get your WS_FTP Server product package from your Progress Community page, the activation code is embedded in the download file and is automatically applied during installation.

    The activation code is also stored in the Product Downloads section of the Progress Community for reference.

Upgrade Paths

WS_FTP Server upgrade paths depend on your database :
  • PostgreSQL: When upgrading WS_FTP Server with PostgreSQL, follow the appropriate upgrade path based on your current version:
    • Direct upgrades are supported to 8.8.10, 9.0.1, or newer: 8.7 > 9.0.1, or 8.8.x > 9.0.1
    • Upgrading to 9.0.0 requires a sequential upgrade: 8.7 > 8.8.x > 9.0.0

      You must upgrade to any 8.8.x version before proceeding to 9.0.0.

  • MSSQL: WS_FTP Server 2024 supports direct upgrade for existing WS_FTP Server 2020 (8.7) and newer installations

Use the Upgrade Path tables below to determine the most efficient upgrade path from your current version to WS_FTP Server 2024.

The upgrade paths are valid only on supported Operating Systems. For more information, see System Requirements.

  1. Download WS_FTP Server 2024.0.1 (9.0.1) from the Progress Community.

To upgrade to 2024.0.1 (9.0.1)
  1. Download WS_FTP Server 2024.0.1 from the Progress Community.
  2. Your upgrade activation code is embedded in the installer file, and is automatically used during installation.
To upgrade to 2024 (9.0.0):
  1. Upgrade to version 2022 (8.8.x) using the 2022 installer in upgrade mode.

    You must upgrade to any 2022 (8.8.x) version before proceeding to 2024 (9.0.0).

  2. Use the latest installer to upgrade to 2024 (9.0.0).

WS_FTP Server 2018 (8.6) or earlier
  1. Upgrade to version 2020 (8.7) using the 2020 installer in upgrade mode.
  2. Upgrade to version 2022 (8.8.x) using the 2022 installer in upgrade mode.

    You must upgrade to any 2022 (8.8.x) version before proceeding to 2024 (9.0.0).

  3. Use the latest installer to upgrade to 2024 (9.0.0).
Note: If your product version is close to or past its sunset or retirement milestones, upgrade to the latest version of WS_FTP Server. For more information, see the Product Support Lifecycle page.

  1. Upgrade to a supported version, such as 2020 (8.7) using the 2020 installer in upgrade mode.
  2. Use the latest installer to upgrade to 2024.
Note: If your product version is close to or past its sunset or retirement milestones, upgrade to the latest version of WS_FTP Server. For more information, see the Product Support Lifecycle page.
Note: If you upgrade from a version earlier than 2020, the default installation folders do not change. For example, the WS_FTP Server installation folder will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Ipswitch\WS_FTP Server.
