To install MOVEit Transfer:
Use these instructions as you run the MOVEit Installer:
- Log in to Microsoft Windows as Administrator or using a comparable account with full administrative privileges to the computer.
- Choose one of the following options to begin the installation:
- Right-click the downloaded MOVEit installation file to run the installation as an Administrator.
- Run the installation from an Administrator command prompt, for example
"C:Users\Administrator\Desktop\MOVEit_Install.exe"Note: To run the installation offline, use the command prompt with the Offline option, for example"C:Users\Administrator\Desktop\MOVEit_Install.exe" /Offline
- Read the Welcome screen and indicate if you want to configure MOVEit using either Express or Custom installation mode. Express installs all program features and uses the default installation path. Custom installs modules selected by the user and allows them to configure additional settings as needed. Then, click Next to proceed.
- Enter your MOVEit activation key, then click
Next . Doing so activates your software using your computer's Internet
connection and populates your serial number from the installation file.Note: From here, you can either choose to activate your MOVEit installation using a license file which can be retrieved from the My Products section of the Customer Portal, or by using the offline activation process. This option is useful if your MOVEit server is not connected to the Internet.
- Select the MOVEit modules you want to install.Note: MOVEit Mobile Server was deprecated for the 2020 release. The latest mobile client that you install from app stores ("MOVEit Mobile") only needs MOVEit Transfer 2019.2 or later. For more information, see the Release Notes.
Click Next to proceed.
- Review the system configuration check results. If prerequisite checks
did not pass, please resolve them, then click Revalidate
to perform the system configuration check again. Click Next to proceed.Note: If you selected Custom when beginning this installation, proceed to the next step. If you selected Express installation, proceed directly to step 10.
- Specify whether you want to install a new instance of My SQL Server
locally, use an Existing Microsoft SQL Server or an
Existing Microsoft Azure SQL Server database, then click
Next .Note: Your application server (your MOVEit Transfer Server) and database need to be configured for the same time zone. Otherwise, security features like multi-factor authentication for sign-on as well as secure connection protocols used between the services will not function.Note: You can reveal the configured time zone to users using Org-level controls (SETTINGS -> Display -> Regulatory Compliance -> "GMT" timezone offset statement). See the MOVEit Transfer Administrator Guide for details.Note: To use an Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), select Existing Microsoft SQL Server and use the address that you received from AWS when your database instance was created.
- If you chose My SQL Server , enter a name and location for
the new instance as well as credentials for both the MYSQL Administrator and MYSQL
User accounts, then click Next .Note: MOVEit recommends using the default names provided for your databases. If you choose to use non-standard database names, please do so during product installation as modifying them after installation is complete could cause potential issues with network monitoring.
- If you chose Existing Microsoft SQL Server , enter the SQL Server name along with the SQL Server Administrator Login name and password for MOVEit to use to access the existing instance, then click Next .
- If you chose Existing Microsoft Azure SQL Server , enter the SQL Server name along with the SQL Server Administrator Login name and password for MOVEit to use to access the existing instance, then click Next .
- If you chose My SQL Server , enter a name and location for
the new instance as well as credentials for both the MYSQL Administrator and MYSQL
User accounts, then click Next .
- Specify the destination folders for the following:
- MOVEit Transfer Application files.
Specify a local path on the properly configured host where you are running the installation. (This folder is also referred to as Install Directory). This host must satisfy software and hardware requirements specified in the Release Notes (where the Release Notes are the same version as the MOVEit installer).
Default value:
C:\Program Files\MOVEit.
- MOVEit Transfer Data folder.
This folder is typically on a NAS, SAN, or separate drive that can be reached from the MOVEit Transfer Application node as if it were local. For example, you can make this reachable using network storage or a mapped drive (let's say "
D:" or "Z:") shared with the MOVEit Transfer Application node.Default value:
C:\MOVEitTransfer.
- MOVEit Transfer Application files.
- Select a file location to save the encrypted file and package storage.
- If you chose the default File System , the encrypted files are stored in the Data folder defined in the Application Folders step. Click Next .
- If you chose Azure Blob Storage , provide your Azure Blob Storage Account details.
- To apply a layered encrypt at-rest scheme that includes MOVEit and
Azure storage service encryption, select the Encrypt with
MOVEit check box.
Checkbox
Mode
Result
Cleared (
)Azure Encryption Only (2019.x Default)
Realize the full and intended performance gain of Azure block Blob (NoSQL) storage for your MOVEit Transfer filestore while using encryption at the Azure Storage Service level which uses the latest ciphers.
Selected (
)Azure Encryption and MOVEit Encryption.
Apply MOVEit Transfer encryption throughout (filestore, non-root files, and more).(Filestore will be double-encrypted.)
Note: Do not choose the Azure-only encryption mode in 2019.x if you plan to point to an existing Azure Blob store used from a 2019.0 MOVEit Transfer Server. This can result in an operating environment where two different encryption schemes are in use for your file store. Mixed encryption schemes are not specifically supported by MOVEit Transfer . - Click Next .Note: Your application server (your MOVEit Transfer Server) and database need to be configured for the same time zone. You can reveal the configured time zone to users using Org-level controls (SETTINGS -> Display -> Regulatory Compliance -> "GMT" timezone offset statement).
Note: If you choose to encrypt at-rest files with MOVEit as well as Azure there is a performance trade-off (added-encryption versus added performance). Azure Blobs are encrypted at the Azure Storage Service level. Opting to retain the MOVEit Transfer encryption for your system filestore (layered encryption), can require more processing power during peak periods (or bigger Azure node) for the MOVEit Transfer Server to lessen any performance impact or perceived latency when users read or transfer files. - Enter username and password credential sets for both the SysAdmin
account and the Windows Service user account as well as a root key passphrase. Click
Next to proceed. Note: The SysAdmin password can be modified following installation. However, the Windows Service user account and root key credentials cannot. Ensure the credentials you have entered in this dialog are correct before proceeding.
- Specify whether you want to Create a new IIS
website or Use an existing IIS website
, then click Next .
- If you chose Create a new IIS website , indicate if you want to use the Local System account or a Different account. Enter a valid Username and Password for the account if applicable. Click Next to proceed.
- If you chose Use an existing IIS website , please provide the site address. Click Next to proceed.
- Specify the URL users should enter to connect to the MOVEit Transfer
server.Note: Email notifications will be sent using this URL regardless of the server's internal hostname or IP address.
- Enter the server, sender, and recipient addresses MOVEit should use for email communication as well as the URL users should enter to connect to the MOVEit server. Additionally, enable TLS and indicate if credentials are required for communication, if needed. Click Next to proceed.
- Specify whether you want to Create a new certificate or Use an existing certificate . If you opt to create a new encryption certificate, MOVEit will autogenerate one which will expire after 90 days, then click Next .
- Review the Summary dialog and ensure the detailed configuration settings
displayed are correct, then click Proceed . The
MOVEit install program begins the installation.Note: Click Copy Credentials to generate a text file with this information for your reference following installation. This is your only opportunity to generate a copy of this important information.

. Click Help for additional information on this tool when the interfaces
launches following MOVEit Transfer installation.
